What Sets the Gonstead System Apart?
Developed by Dr. Clarence Gonstead, a mechanical engineer turned chiropractor, the Gonstead Method is rooted in science and precision. Unlike many generic chiropractic techniques in use today, every adjustment begins with a thorough examination using the five pillars of analysis to locate the exact cause of spinal dysfunction. What makes this approach truly unique is that all five steps are performed at every single visit, not just the first appointment.
“To see is to know, and to not see is to guess.” – Dr. Clarence Gonstead
The 5 Steps of Gonstead Analysis

Step 1:
Visualization
Analysis begins the moment you walk through the door. Dr. Zach observes your posture, movement, and gait, noting differences in ear, shoulder, and hip heights. Visible signs such as swelling, redness, or muscle tightness near the spine can indicate a subluxation, helping confirm findings from the other four steps.

Step 2:
Static Palpation
Dr. Zach carefully feels your spine in a stationary position, checking for swelling, tenderness, and any abnormal texture or tightness in the surrounding muscles and soft tissues. Where there is swelling, there is often an inflamed nerve that needs attention. The hands confirm what the eyes have seen.

Step 3:
Instrumentation
The Nervoscope is a dual-probe device that is gently guided down the length of the back to detect uneven heat distribution along the spine caused by inflammation and nerve irritation. Readings indicate the presence of subluxations, track correction progress, and confirm when correction has been achieved. It is used both before and after every adjustment.

Step 4:
Motion Palpation
Motion palpation assesses the spine while it is being gently moved and bent at various angles, allowing Dr. Zach to determine how freely each spinal segment moves. The subluxated vertebra is identified and its exact position determined before any adjustment is made. Skipping this step could mean an incomplete correction.

Step 5:
X-Ray Analysis
Full-spine, weight-bearing X-rays capture everything from the pelvis to the base of the skull, revealing missing curves, disc health, degeneration, bone density, and any anomalies that need to be accounted for before adjustments are made.
Gentle, Focused Adjustments for Lasting Results
Another reason we offer Gonstead adjustments at the practice is that they’re incredibly gentle. No twisting or cracking! Dr. Zach adjusts only the segments that truly need correction, avoiding unnecessary manipulation of the spine. This focused care minimizes stress on your body, promotes faster healing, and supports long-term spinal health.
